Cribbage is an age old game that was developed in the 17th century as a derivative of the game called Noddy. It has been played for centuries and has been an integral part of the English culture. In the US Navy cribbage boards are transferred from one submarine to another submarine in the fleet. There are certain accessories that are traditionally used to play cribbage, although today you can simply use a deck of cards and keep score on paper. Traditionally however, a cribbage board is used to keep each players score, with metal pegs being placed into holes that mark each players previous and current scores.
The Cribbage Board
In cribbage, a wooden board, usually made from walnut, is used to keep the scores of each player. This board has a series of holes in it that are counted and marked with pegs to keep the score for each player. You get 2 track, 3 track, and 4 track cribbage boards that are used, depending on how many players there are. Normally, cribbage is meant to consist of only two players, but you can also play with 3 or 4. Some unique cribbage boards are made from fine woods and varnished to protect them for years to come. Some of the boards for playing cribbage are small and contain only the holes for the pegs, but some also have felt bottoms and are large enough to contain the crib and players cards. You normally find 18 inch and 24 inch cribbage boards. You can also get 30 inch cribbage boards, and instead of wood, you also get aluminum boards, which are perfect for travelling and are light enough to take with you just about anywhere. Some boards offer dark walnut finishes, inlaid walnut tracks, and even tracks that are different colors.
The Cribbage Pegs
Along with your cribbage set, you should get metal or wooden pegs that are used as the scoring pieces for the board. Each player usually has 2 pegs that are used for scoring. The cribbage pegs that you can get come in all shapes and sizes, as well as colors. You can get traditional wooden pegs made from walnut or maple, silver or gold metallic pegs, brass pegs, and black pegs. For a fun scoring cribbage set you can choose from white pegs, blue pegs, red pegs, green pegs, yellow pegs, or even purple pegs. These can be entirely painted wood, plastic, or you can also find brass pegs with this array of colors inlaid on the top of the peg.
The Cribbage Box
Some cribbage sets include the classic wooden or walnut inlaid cribbage box. This allows for the storage of the cribbage cards, pegs and other items for playing. Usually the cover of the box doubles as the cribbage board, but sometimes the board can be a separate piece that is laid over when the game is played and then stored in the box afterwards. Cribbage boxes make great gifts and most of them can be personalized for the receiver.
